How can we do such practices and aspire at being of the pious in the time of ordeal? How can we do this and look forward to win Allah's Promise of a way-out and generous sustenance?

Not a thing on earth or in heavens is hidden from Allah All-Mighty and no creature can deceive Him, Exalted be He. Allah knows us best since He created us as fetus in our mothers' wombs. Allah says in this regard: [ They (think to) deceive Allah and those who believe, while they only deceive themselves, and perceive (it) not!] (Al-Baqarah:9) Allah, Glory be to Him, also says: [ Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He Who deceives them.] (An-Nisa: 142).

It may be said that sometimes a person does not perform prayers or fear Allah and may even commit sins at the time of ordeal, but Allah grants him a way-out very quickly. So, Why do we not follow in the steps of such persons?.. The answer is that Allah All-Mighty grants such people an opportunity to repent, but if they do not, Allah All-Mighty torments them severely. About those people, Allah All-Mighty says:

[ So let not their wealth nor their children amaze you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم ) in reality Allah’s Plan is to punish them with these things in the life of this world, and that their souls shall depart (die) while they are disbelievers. ] (At-Taubah: 55 ).
